Jeewana Yathra - Bridging The Education Gap Of Students In Rural Sri Lanka
12/09/2020
“In an initiative to contribute towards uplifting the educational standards of rural Sri Lankans, we at Third Space Global joined hands with the Leo Club District 306 A2 in donating 20 desktop computers to an underprivileged school located in Ruhunu Magampura, in the Hambantota district, as a project under the ‘Jeewana Yathra 2021’ programme.”
Poverty in Sri Lanka has been an ever-present burden to our society. The average Sri Lankan living in urban Colombo earns up to Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 90,000 a month. This however is not the same for most people living in the rural areas of our country who struggle to earn just Rs. 10,000 a month. Some even lack the basic day-to-day necessities like food, water and shelter. Their only focus is on surviving each day as it comes.
Among the many lingering challenges that the people of rural Sri Lanka face is the difficulty in providing their children with a suitable education. It is not unheard of for children from poor homes to drop out of school by the time they are in the 5th grade to find work and earn for the family. Many rural schools lack the infrastructure and resources to provide students with a suitable standard of education.
Jeewana Yathra is an initiative taken by the Leo Club District 306 A2 of Sri Lanka, operating under the International Association of Lions Clubs with the objective of tackling these issues faced by the rural citizens of our country through various charity programmes such as infrastructure improvements, health and hygiene programs, skill development, O’Level seminars, motivations sessions, etc.
At Third Space Global we too play an active role in opening up doorways to bigger and better possibilities in children’s lives on a daily basis through providing online maths tuition to underprivileged primary school students in the UK. In doing so we do not forget the very same need for a quality education that exists for our own children in Sri Lanka.
In an initiative to contribute towards uplifting the educational standards of rural Sri Lankans, we at Third Space Global joined hands with the Leo Club District 306 A2 in donating 20 desktop computers to an underprivileged school located in Ruhunu Magampura, in the Hambantota district, as a project under the ‘Jeewana Yathra 2021’ programme. These computers would undoubtedly serve as vital tools for these students in helping them with building on their skills in IT, thereby opening up better opportunities and possibilities in terms of their future career growth.
Our objective and purpose are quite clear. Every student should be entitled to quality education in order to discover their full potential. To do so they require the proper resources, tools, guidance and support to achieve this and no student should be left behind. We believe that initiatives such as Jeewana Yathra would serve in eradicating the barrier to the personal development of students in Sri Lanka, just as we strive to do the same on a global level.
